Aboriginal learning will further be supported and advanced through the creation and implementation of the Centre for Policy in Aboriginal Learning. In creating the Centre, Confederation College is advancing a vision of Aboriginal education whereby Indigenous knowledge, practice and principles are shared with all learners.
Negahneewin Council
Negahneewin Council is comprised of representatives from various Indigenous organizations within our community and region. They provide strategic direction on issues that pertain to the advancement of Indigenous education and learning at Confederation College.
Negahneewin Vision
The Negahneewin Vision is a 10 year plan (2012-2022) that outlines Negahneewin Council’s objectives for Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners at the college (please see PDF for details). This serves as a map for college administration, faculty, staff and students to work together to partner with Indigenous communities to achieve common ground towards these goals. The principle is one of respect and inclusion whereby Indigenous Knowledges are foundational to all learning.
CPAL Work Group
The Work Group’s primary responsibility is to implement the Strategic Plan (2013-2016) with a focus on the Centre for Policy in Aboriginal Learning, in accordance with the second pillar to support and advance Aboriginal learning. In this work, we are governed by the Seven Grandfather Teachings of the Anishinaabe people. Through the enactment of Love, Respect, Humility, Honesty, Bravery and Wisdom, we can ultimately achieve Truth.
CPAL Work Group Membership
The membership of the CPAL Work Group is predominately comprised of representatives internal to the college because it is tasked to carry out aspects of the College’s Strategic Plan. However, in recognition of the expertise of the larger community, an external seat has been created, which is currently represented by Howard Twance from Seven Generations.

Bawaajigan Speakers Series
The Bawaajigan Speakers Series is a set of workshops that developed by the CPAL Work Group in 2014. The training was designed to increase awareness within the College surrounding the historical, political and social context of Indigenous Education. These one-hour workshops ran from October 2014 to April 2015, with speakers being represented from both the internal college community as well as outside organizations. Topics included: the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, Post-Secondary and K-12 Aboriginal Policy Frameworks, the Landscape of Aboriginal Education, the First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act, Regional Collaborations in Aboriginal Education, and Aboriginal Research Considerations.
The meaning of Bawaajigan in Anishinaabemowin is ‘vision’. This series aims to forward the vision of Confederation College to support and advance Aboriginal learning, as well as to create a space for staff to reflect on how they can incorporate increased awareness of the issues into everyday practices.
