Selection Criteria (Admissions)

When more qualified applications are received by February 1st than we have program seats available, we will use formal selection techniques to determine final selection. The application and academic transcripts indicating the applicant is registered in all required courses must be received by February 1st.

Selection scores and applicant ranking are used only when we cannot accept all qualified applicants whose applications were received by the equal application consideration date. Typically, this occurs with the following programs: Medical Radiation Technology, Dental Hygiene, Paramedic,  and Aviation Flight Management although each year is different. These programs may have admission and selection criteria beyond the minimum admission requirements. Please refer to the individual program pages or contact our Admissions Department for more information.

Permanent residents of Ontario will be given admission priority, followed by permanent residents of other Canadian provinces and territories and then citizens of other countries for our first round of Offers.

Where a program specific selection process is not outlined, candidate selection in an oversubscribed program occurs as follows:

1. Selection Criteria for Secondary School Graduates/Potential Graduates.

Selection scores for applicants who apply by Feb. 1 are based on available grade 11 and grade 12 marks. The selection score will be calculated using the courses listed on the program webpage as required for admissions. This will include Grade 12 English (or substitution of Grade 11 English grade), as well as any other course listed as required. This may also include using the next 2 highest senior academic course grades at the college, college/university or university level. The exceptions are our Health Science programs, where selection is made using just the courses listed as required.

The college may consider substitutions of grade 11 courses where marks in required courses are not available.

Mid term marks provided in an in progress course will be used to reassess the scoring for an Applicant. If the mid term is a failing mark, the mark will not be used to the detriment of the Applicant. Please be advised the Applicant will still need to complete and successfully pass the in progress course with the minimum mark required for admission to the program they have applied to.

2. Selection Criteria for Mature Students - 19 years of age or older and no OSSD or equivalent.

Provided other admission requirements have been met, mature student applicants are selected to fill available seats based on the mature student test results/postsecondary grade point averages/upgrading marks and marks in any required courses.

Selection Statistics for Oversubscribed/High Demand Programs

Selection scores (made up of the required courses) vary somewhat from one year to the next, depending on the pool of applicants. Clicking the link below will take you to a chart that outlines the selection statistics for our competitive programs over the past 5 years.  The minimum score is the lowest score that was sent a first round offer after the February equal consideration date. The score is comprised of the courses required for admission purposes.

Bonus Point Structure for Graduates with Previous Postsecondary CREDENTIALS

  • If the postsecondary transcript indicates graduation with a degree or diploma  from an accredited college or university in a field of study with a similar discipline, with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, 4 additional selection points will be awarded. For example, a selection score of 75% would change to 79%
  • If the postsecondary transcript indicates graduation with a certificate  from a college or university in a field of study with a similar discipline, with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, 3 additional selection points will be awarded. For example, a selection score of 75% would change to 78%
  • If the postsecondary transcript indicates graduation with a degree, diploma or certificate  from a college or university in a field of study with a non-related discipline, with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, 1 additional selection point will be awarded. For example, a selection score of 75% would change to 76%

Bonus Point Structure for Completion of Significant Postsecondary COURSES

• If the transcript(s) indicate a minimum of five postsecondary courses, or 3 full university credits, with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, in a similar discipline area, 2 additional selection points will be added to the selection score. For example, a selection score of 75% would change to 77%.

NOTE:  Specialist High Skills Major and Dual Credit Courses:
These courses can be used to provide college credits but will not provide applicants with preferential treatment in admission decisions.

Issuing of Offers of Admission

Successful applicants will receive an Offer of Admission with instructions on how to confirm acceptance. You could receive more than one Offer of Admission, depending on the number of colleges and programs listed on your application. You can only accept one offer to one program at any one college. Please be advised that confirming a seat in one program will not remove you from a waitlist in another program.

Acceptance of offers must be confirmed with ontariocolleges.ca by the specified date. Failure to notify ontariocolleges.ca of your acceptance and non-payment of tuition fees to Confederation College by the date specified on your Offer of Admission will result in a loss of your program seat. Offers of Admission are conditional on successful completion of specified admission requirements, timely receipt of program confirmation and tuition fee payment.

Confederation College reserves the right to cancel or suspend a program. Applicants will be notified in a timely manner and given options for available alternate program choices.
