LAN Services (Computer Services)
NOTE: this page contains some outdated information. To be updated. (posted 8/18/20)
Description:
Computer Services runs a Cisco Systems powered local area network (LAN). This LAN connects nearly 2,000 computers in labs and offices together in a large network that can access various services at Confederation College. More than 4,000 network jacks around Confederation College are connected to our local area network by a structured cabling system. Some of the services that can be accessed over the LAN are:
-
Access to printers in labs and offices
-
Access to email
-
Access to the Internet
-
Access to shared files
-
Access to shared software
-
Access to our Website
-
Access to library resources, databases, etc.
-
Access to Wireless Network
Our local area network is protected from the Internet by the College firewall service. We also have automated “Intrusion Detection Services” that monitor our network for suspicious activity and report problems back to Computer Services if a resource on the network is being affected by this activity. In some cases, the Intrusion Detection Service will take steps automatically to protect our network.
Our local area network (LAN) also extends out into our 8 regional campuses located in Drdent, Kenora, Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, Marathon, and Longlac. Employees and students in these locations have access to the same services and resources that are available in the Thunder Bay Campus.
Who is it for:
This services is available to all employees and students at Confederation College.
How do I use it:
The majority of the computer equipment at Confederation College is already attached to the local area network (LAN). Access to the individual resources on the LAN depends on the services that you are trying to access and your authorization to use the service.
