Award Overview
The Board of Governors' Employee Awards of Excellence are dedicated to employees who have demonstrated great excellence in their daily tasks; have contributed to student success; demonstrated commitment to their own professional development; and made a contribution to the goals of their department and to the mission of the College.
Awards will be presented to one full-time and one part-time employee in each group (Faculty, Administrative and Support), as determined by a college panel.
You are strongly encouraged to nominate and recognize those staff members who are most deserving of this high honour at Confederation College.

Carol Cline
Recipient of the 2024 Administrative Award of Excellence - Full Time
Carol has been in a full-time administrative position since 2015 and has held the role of Dean, Workforce Development since May of 2021. She has held previous part-time positions prior to her administrative roles. She has received nominations in previous years and this year’s nomination came with support from multiple peers. Carol leads by example with her down-to-earth style, open-door policy, and sense of humour. She is described as a model for strong leadership in her integrity, growth-mindset for her department, empathy, and open-mindedness. She works to create a team environment and builds on successes with her departments. She is widely recognized for her ability to listen thoughtfully and respectfully, and to propose and deliver programming that truly helps build community capacity.

Suzanne McMahon
Recipient of the 2024 Support Staff Award of Excellence - Full Time
Suzanne has been a full-time support staff since 2015 as a Facilities Services Parking Assistant within the Public Safety department. She is described as having a balanced approach by giving students and staff the benefit of the doubt when they arrive and are navigating the parking system. She is courageous in upholding the parking rules for the safety and welfare of the college community and handles the frequent difficult conversations and emails with firm but considerate replies. She completes her work professionally, consistently and with dedication while contributing everyday to improving the student experience and the college.

Maria Cole
Recipient of the 2024 Faculty Award of Excellence - Full Time
Maria has been a full-time faculty since 2013 in the Early Childhood Education Program with prior experience in part-time roles teaching. Maria has had an enormous impact in her role by focusing on her deliver of quality education, student success, their needs, their general happiness, and ensuring students have access to the abundance of resources available to them. She has been nominated because of her ability to teach first by example, and because of her ability to model professionalism, ethics and leadership for students and the ECE community. She stands with integrity, a deep-rooted passion for the field of ECE, is approachable, and most of all she encourages students to become informed, think critically, read and question everything through a reflective lens, as well challenge the fundamentals of our existing practice.

Allison Hynnes
Recipient of the 2024 Administrative Award of Excellence - Part Time
Allison has been a part-time Human Resources Officer in the Organizational Effectiveness department since September 2023. Prior to this role, Allison worked in full-time administrative roles as both the Manager of Human Resources and Labour Relations and as an Employee Health and Wellness Consultant since 2016. Not only is Allison a valuable knowledge holder in her department, but she is a natural leader. Allison is an easy going and thoughtful coworker who takes the time to explain things and make sure you’ve really “got it” before moving on. She demonstrates a strong emotional intelligence and genuine care for people which has led to strong interpersonal skills with those in her department and beyond. She sets an example for others by modeling appropriate behaviour on a day-to-day basis and is a champion for promoting these values throughout the college.
Callen Retter
Recipient of the 2024 Support Staff Award of Excellence - Part Time
Callen has been a part-time support staff as a Library Technician since June 2023. She previously worked as a full-time support staff as a Library Systems Officer since 2016 and has held various part-time teaching positions. She is described as providing flexible and superb customer service to those accessing the library resources. She demonstrates a student first approach and previously provided exceptional service to a group of students who took on a 3D printing project. Callen did an exceptional job at provided training and assistance to the group trying to understand the technology. Her courage and enthusiasm in building trust-based relationships with the students enabled her to overcome language and technology barriers to set the students up for success. She provides innovative ideas in her work and is appreciated for her sharp attention to detail.
Gail Parnega
Recipient of the 2024 Faculty Award of Excellence - Part Time
Gail has been a part-time faculty since 2007 and is currently teaching in the Interactive Media Development Program. She was nominated a total of five times with an extensive list of additional nominators supporting her to win this award. She is described by her students and peers as a very caring and supportive professor. She is always putting forth her best effort to make sure that a student is doing well and is on the right path to achieve their goal. She has created an inclusive and comfortable environment for students and invests time and effort into getting to know her students and colleagues.

Colin Kelly
Recipient of the 2023 Administrative Award of Excellence
Colin began working for Confederation College in 2011 first as the Director of Applied Research. Colin currently holds the position of Dean, School of Aviation, Engineering Technology, and Trades. Colin’s nomination for the Award of Excellence was supported by 17 nominators. He is described as a creative individual who supports his team by providing them with the tools and resources they need to be successful. He actively pursues collaborative opportunities that will help to ensure student success and always has the best interests of his team and our students in mind. He is a strong leader who is willing to listen, discuss ideas openly and honestly, and acts with integrity. He provides feedback to his team members and doesn’t miss an opportunity to ask how things are going despite his school being one of the largest.

Brett Sharman
Recipient of the 2023 Faculty Award of Excellence
Brett began teaching as a full-time faculty member in 2014 and is the current Program Coordinator for the International Business Management program. Prior to that, he taught on a part time basis with Confederation College beginning in 2012. Brett has received nominations for the Award of Excellence consecutively over the past 3 years and received a total of 4 separate nominations this year. He is described as a moral and motivating professional. He considers the needs of his students and does what he can to ensure they succeed. Students look forward to attending his classes which are described as fun, interesting, and informative. He builds strong, genuine relationships with those in his class. Brett is passionate about sustainability and shares incorporates the information into the classroom wherever he can. He actively works within the College community to promote sustainability and further the College’s commitment to the SDG accord.

Rose Hankkio
Recipient of the 2023 Support Staff Award of Excellence
Rose has been employed with Confederation College for over 10 years. She currently holds the position of Lead Integration Facilitator within the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) program. Rose consistently takes a strengths-based, person-centered, biopsychosocial approach when supporting students in overcoming their challenges and creating plans for students’ success. She doesn’t give up and when Plan A doesn’t work, she always has Plan B in her back pocket. She is a strong advocate for the students of CICE and does so in a kind and respectful way. She is a strong leader to the CICE team. She is described as enthusiastic, patient, fair, flexible, respectful and humorous. She takes the time to understand people, both students and coworkers and makes them feel like valued individuals and helps them to succeed in whatever way she can. She is proud to be an employee of the college and is the biggest cheerleader for the CICE program.

Recipient of the 2018
Cristal is a Confederation College alumna and has been with the College since 2004. Originally working at the Thunder Bay Campus, in 2012 she accepted a position at our Rainy River Campus which is where she currently works as the Project Assistant.
She is a team player who will volunteer to help out her colleagues at a moment’s notice. She’s often described as having the patience of a saint. She is positive, friendly, and approachable. You can always count on a smile and a “Hello!” from her.
Cristal always goes above and beyond for our students. Being a central contact for the Dual Credit program, she works with students, college instructors, high school teachers, and administrators alike to help remove any barriers students may face, clearing a path to ensure they can achieve their goals. She has certainly worked to build great relationships and a strong network geared towards student success.
Cristal truly acts as a face of the campus within the community. She regularly participates in the planning and execution of events within the college. She is involved with the Confederation Day committee, graduation committee and the 50th Anniversary Committee, as well as the Fort Frances Diversity Committee.

Lisa JackRecipient of the 2017
Having been employed with Confederation College for over 25 years, one word could describe Lisa – Dedication.
As a Support Staff employee, Lisa’s focus was on student support with their research needs. Her goals, initiatives and plans have and remain based on what is best for our students and their success. She believes in each student and in the education that all students receive.
Now, as Manager of the Paterson Library Commons, she continues to ensure the library supports students through late night study sessions, new technology and resources. Lisa also assures the testing centre and tutoring options are focused on student support and success. For her co-workers, Lisa ensures they have the opportunities to explore professional development that meets student expectations.
Lisa is also a supporter of Indigenous Learning Outcomes, and Diversity on Campus. Lisa excels in career and personal development; earning her Master’s Degree, sitting on several college committees and participating in external provincial and national committees.
Lisa strives for excellence in all that she does; from workplace best practices to student satisfaction. Well respected by all, she shows care and concern for our diverse student body, provides clear expectations to co-workers, as well as guidance and a sounding board for fellow managers.

“Send them to me”. These words are spoken with compassion. The individual speaking these words - Mandy Wright.
For the School of Engineering Technology and Trades, Mandy is the epitome of an advocate for student success, always available to assist ET&T students in need of advice, guidance or direction. Whether a student is trying to attain missing credits, register for a class, access resources or apply for bursaries, Mandy always has the much needed answers.
She embodies all core values of Confederation College and strives for excellence in all that she does, setting the bar high for students, co-workers as well as herself. It is through her drive and encouragement that Mandy has become a strong team member at ET&T. She has been portrayed as kind, caring, open and honest, treating all with professional courtesy, yet she remains very approachable. Playing a vital role, Mandy keeps the School of ET&T connected to the rest of the college. If there are co-workers that have questions that cannot find answers, the easiest way is to “Ask Mandy”! Colleagues and co-workers alike have stated “Our jobs would be substantially more difficult if Mandy wasn’t around”.

Daniel GonzalezRecipient of the 2017
Starting out as a new graduate from the Instrumentation Engineering Technician- Process Automation Program in Mexico, an International student arrives in Canada to continue studies at Confederation College. Today, that same student is an instructor with the School of Engineering Technology. His name – Daniel Garcia-Gonzales.
Daniel has adjusted well to his new surroundings. He has tailored course subject matter to incorporate themes from several courses as well as programming courses, to allow his students to gain insight into programs being used and material yet to come.
According to his students, Daniel upholds the attitude; “ You get out what you put in”. He remains very approachable to his students and is always available for consultation through text, email, or phone. He gladly shares advice with his students regarding his courses or courses that are within the scope of his knowledge. In doing so, he encourages his students to strive to achieve their best work. Professionalism, integrity and resilience serve his students best interest.
Described by students and faculty as natural, enthusiastic, and dynamic, Daniel continues to demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning.

Frances Bennett-SuttonRecipient of the 2016 Full-Time Faculty Award of Excellence
Leader, compassionate, enthusiastic, advocate, ambassador – these are all words that can be used to describe Frances Bennett-Sutton. She is a leader in her field as the coordinator of the Environmental Technician program, as well as spearheading a partnership with Lakehead University to promote the Integrated Water program. Compassion and enthusiasm drive Frances each and every day to provide the best environment she possibly can for her students and colleagues. She has taken her students under her wing by expressing an interest in their lives, focusing on their success at Confederation College, or even just offering kind words of advice. Frances also leads by example. She is a strong ally for the Aboriginal community by challenging her students to confront and examine their biases or held beliefs. As well, she has opened her students’ eyes to the privileges and injustices in Canada and beyond. She is also a safeTALK facilitator and is a part of the CPAL initiative for Aboriginal Outcomes, and the Website Renewal committee. Through her actions, she is an Ambassador of the College by living out our mission, vision, and values as well as our Respect initiative. |

Anita PriceRecipient of the 2015 Administrative Award of Excellence Anita Price has been with the Children and Family Centre since 1982. Working in positions of increasing responsibility over the next few years, Anita became Supervisor of the Centre in 1992 and Manager in 1997. Anita is described as an excellent role model and mentor to other child care supervisors. She regularly leads workshops for other organizations and sits on numerous committees related to early-years programs. Anita is a leader in every way, including environmental education, teaching children about vegetables and gardening and how they form a part of meals. Anita’s employees describe her as a good listener, fair and supportive of their strengths, capabilities and goals. One of her nominators said you could describe Anita in one word: unpretentious, in that she would never ask her staff to do anything she isn’t prepared to do herself. She is a hands on leader who commands respect because of her gentle but firm nature. |
Margy PedersenRecipient of the 2015 Margy Pederson began her employment at the College on a part time basis in 2000, and in 2003 was hired as a full time receptionist in the Centre for Continuing Education. She is currently a Senior Program Support Specialist. Margy is well known for her exceptional customer service, communications and interpersonal skills, and is described as warm and caring by her nominators. She regularly volunteers at graduation ceremonies, enthusiastically greeting every student with a smile. Passionate about student success, Margy works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that everything is in place for students prior to the start of class. Margy is also known for maintaining interest lists and contacting students when classes are offered that interest them. Margy is referred to as a “Banner specialist” and often provides tips and tricks to others to help make their jobs easier. |
Giannina VeltriRecipient of the 2015 Giannina Veltri is a professor and coordinator in the Tourism-Travel and Eco-Adventure program. A seasoned veteran of the tourism industry, Giannina has traveled the world the equivalent of three times, enabling her to teach from firsthand experience. Giannina is described in her nomination as a “highly supportive and encouraging” role model for students. Devoting endless hours on evenings and weekends, Giannina works hard to ensure she is current with all new material related to her program. She is a leader in alternative delivery, using Blackboard Collaborate to deliver her program to students in both Northern and Southern Ontario. A champion at ensuring access, Giannina has included exchange students and CICE participants to her classes, and boasts a high level of retention and graduation statistics. |
Melanie EdisonRecipient of the 2015
Melanie Edison teaches part-time in the Medical Radiation Technology program. Melanie received three separate nominations from thirteen different students for this award. Melanie is described as a teacher that “shows tremendous respect for each and every one of her students and is always approachable and caring for student academic needs.” Melanie’s students speak to her ability to create a “creative and effective learning environment” and her willingness to go the extra mile to provide student support. One student stated, “I have had many, many teachers in my 5 years of post-secondary education and Melanie is at the top of the list for teachers whom have made a difference in my student life.” |

Diane is one of our Salary and Benefits Assistants in the Human Resources Department. Diane is described as professional, caring, friendly, engaging and personable. A quote from her nomination reads “she is willing to assist anyone who comes through the office. Whether it be a staff member or student, she will stop what she is doing to accommodate." |
Karen KempRecipient of the 2014 Karen is the Program Coordinator of the Community Integration through Co-operative Education Program (CICE). Karen was chosen because of her excellence in teaching, which is reflected though her personal commitment to student learning and growth and the development of new teaching methods. |
Dayna TrushRecipient of the 2014 Dayna is our Dispatcher at the School of Aviation. A graduate of the College, Dayna is described as the “hub” of the operation and deals with every aspect of ACE. |
Joan DykesRecipient of the 2014 Joan teaches in the Paramedic Program at our Dryden. Joan’s nomination was entirely student driven. Her students describe her as committed, professional, courteous, fair, caring and stern all rolled into one. |

Anne MauroRecipient of the 2013 Administrative Award of Excellence
Anne is the Assistant to Vice President, Student and Corporate Services. She is described as someone who always makes everyone she deals with feel comfortable and welcome with her warm smile, positive can-do attitude and caring manner. Anne also plays an essential role for the Thunder Bay convocation ceremony by coordinating the green room activities. She was co-chair of the Thunderhawks women's hockey spaghetti dinner fundraiser and has been active on a plethora of other college events. A demonstrated lifelong learner, Anne recently graduated from Lakehead University with a Bachelors of Arts with a major in Political Science. |
Richard TatebeRecipient of the 2013
Richard teaches in our Social Services Worker and Concurrent disorders programs and is the Coordinator for the 2012-2113 Academic year. Richard is described as a passionate educator who consistently demonstrates a high level of energy and enthusiasm in everything he does. He has represented faculty on the SUCCI Board, and has jointed the Academic Council. He has growing interest in the area of Aboriginal student retention and will pursue his Doctoral studies to further study Aboriginal Learning Outcomes. |

Shelly is one of our Program Officers in the Centre for Continuing Education. She demonstrates enthusiasm for her job on a daily basis. She takes on all new tasks and roles without hesitation and gets the job done professionally and in a timely manner. She is committed to acting as an ambassador for the College, treating everyone including staff, faculty, students and co-workers with respect. |
Peter RusakRecipient of the 2013 Peter is retired from is career as a high school teacher and has made his way to sharing his wisdom and skills in the College's Academic Upgrading program. Peter's nomination was initiated by his students in the program, which is a testament to his passion for teaching. He was also an integral part in the revision of the math curriculum. He can be counted on to participate in committees and activities in Academic Upgrading. Peter participates in the organizing of Recognition Day, coordinates social gatherings for faculty and staff and he volunteers to sit on other committees as needed. |

Lynda McKeown has been a part of Confederation College’s Program for 36 years. She has served on the Confederation College Advisory Committee, the Thunder Bay Dental Hygiene Association, and the Ontario Dental Hygienists Association. Lynda has also served as President of both the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association and the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario. She is in fact, the first Dental Hygienist to practise in Thunder Bay. |

Ron VopniRecipient of the 2011
Ron Vopni has worked for the College for over 30 years in a quiet, yet professional way. As the Director of Facilities and Ancillary Services, Ron demonstrates excellence in his daily tasks. He has a quiet and effective leadership style that doesn't go unnoticed in his department. He takes on large projects, such as REACH, which is on time and on budget. To quote his nominators "to Ron, leadership is serious business. . Managers who report to Ron say they feel valued and trusted. They describe Ron as a coach and mentor - who inspires and motivates others." Ron consistently uses the aims of student success to make decisions - the many stages of student services renovations over the years was always guided by Ron's long term commitment to what was best for students. |
Barb MorrisonRecipient of the 2011 Barb Morrison teaches in the Practical Nursing Program. She has en extensive health care background which includes medical and surgical nursing, adult and pediatric intensive care, general pediatrics, long term care, rehabilitation and chronic care. Barb's nominators describe her as "an educational visionary" for the work she has performed in helping our College develop REACH. REACH simulation labs have become a state-of-the-art facility with the help of Barb. She is a leader in the use of simulation in practice labs and encourages its use as a means by which nursing students learn in a safe, creative environment that helps students to develop his or her assessment skills, critical thinking and self-confidence in clinical practice and beyond. Barb is also involved in a variety of community partners and organizations. Students and colleagues enjoy working and learning from Barb. She is an inspiration and is dedicated to student's success. |
Peter IsosaariRecipient of the 2011
Peter Isosaari works as a Financial Analyst in the Financial Services department. His nominators describe him as "a friendly and positive staff member who has a calm, yet professional rapport with just about everyone he works with." His nominators also state "Peter always surpasses objectives and provides timely, automated solutions to a myriad of problems." Peter puts himself in the students and internal clients "shoes". One nominator states that "problem solving is one of his strengths." Peter is an active member of SSALT and is committed to bringing financial advice to the academic team. He has a strong dedication to the overall strategic direction of the College and he focuses on doing the right thing and is very collegial when assistance is required. |

Marjorie KinnunenRecipient of the 2010
Marjorie Kinnunen has dedicated more than 24 years to the College, working in a number of roles. She currently holds the position of Registrar. Marjorie has been described as a person who displays devotion to leadership, customer service, the College and its students, and to her own professional development. Marjorie was the team lead for the implementation of Student Banner. She recently furthered her education by receiving her Human Resources Management post diploma. Marjorie creates an open and honest environment for her staff to progress in and supports them in every way possible. |
Michele McManusRecipient of the 2010
Michele McManus, Professor and Coordinator of the Broadcasting Television Production Program, was described in her nomination as an “effective educational leader”. Her commitment to student success and quality education is exhibited in her interaction with students and colleagues alike. Michele meets with students individually each semester to see how they are doing and to give constructive feedback to ensure their success in the program. In addition, Michele played a major role in the rebuilding of the Broadcast facility through CAMP and aided in the development of a new curriculum for the program. Michele is admired by both students and co-workers. |
Enrico PucciRecipient of the 2010
Enrico Pucci is an AV Technician in the Computer Services Department. Enrico’s nomination describes how he provides a high level of customer service to everyone he encounters. He is also portrayed as a very friendly, positive, and creative individual. Enrico displays a strong dedication to his work and is always willing to go above and beyond his expectations. In addition to his work, Enrico volunteers at the Children’s Christmas party, has helped to build floats for the Christmas parade, and is also active in the community. |

Vince Stilla has been a member of the College community since 1991 and is currently the Director of the Centre for Continuing Education. In this position he provides his clients and staff with enthusiasm and positive reinforcement which encourages all who encounter him and his attitude to strive for the top. Vince plays a vital role in the college community where he acts as an ambassador for Confederation College by marketing and spreading his knowledge and skills to all departments and regional areas. Vince exemplifies what is means to be a knowledgeable, student and staff centered employee of the College. |
Leslie SutherlandRecipient of the 2009
Leslie Sutherland, who teaches in the Collaborative Nursing Program, has been portrayed as a student centered, life long learner. The nomination described Leslie as someone who thrives on producing innovative instruction to keep her students focused and interested in all aspect of nursing and learning. Over the past several years Leslie focused her energy and stamina towards the agreement between Lakehead University and Confederation College’s Collaborative Nursing Program which has just been signed. Leslie has been with the College since 1977. |

Joe Donlon is a Distance Education Technician for the Centre for Continuing Education. Joe delivers outstanding customer service to all of his clients with a willingness to be consistent and to go beyond expectations of these clients he exhibits true compassion and dedication. He is well known in the College community due to his persistence with planning and assisting with College events. Joe has been with the College since 2003. |
Sue HoffmanRecipient of the 2009
Sue Hoffman has worked as part time faculty since 2006. She is currently teaching in Negahneewin College of Academic and Community Development. Sue has taught a wide array of subjects including Introductory Psychology, Community Development, Social Welfare, and Student Success. She has been described by students as an approachable teacher who understands subject matter which enables her to relay it confidently to students which motivates and encourages them. |

Shari MacKenzieRecipient of the 2008
Shari MacKenzie has been a full time administrative employee since January 8, 1996. Shari is always leading in a positive and upbeat manner. Encouraging her and other staff to approach change in a positive manner focusing on the end outcome and how it can best serve our students and staff at Confederation College. Fellow colleagues and her staff often come to her for advice and or direction and compliment her on her management skills. |

Tim Matthews has been a full time faculty member since September 2, 1986. Tim is always suited in his chef whites displaying a confident and professional chef and teacher image. Tim also ensures his students follow the same protocol. Tim demonstrates exciting and new dishes as a finished product so the students can be excited about the dish they are preparing. Tim also pulls into the classroom his colourful previous experience on an international level as to excite the students about the potential opportunities in the hospitality field. |
Janet ArinobuRecipient of the 2008
Janet Arinobu has been a full time support staff employee since November 9, 1987. Janet has shown enthusiasm and dedication to her job consistently throughout her employment with Confederation College. Whether she is dealing with a student, a colleague, or an external customer, Janet can always be counted on to treat the client with respect; to respond efficiently, accurately and professionally; and to leave the client feeling positive about the encounter. |

Marsha began her thirty-four year career in 1971 as a Keypunch Operator in the Computer Centre. She and now assists staff in the Human Resources Services Department as a Salary and Benefits Assistant. Jacquie, who teaches in the General Arts and Science Program, has been portrayed as student-centered, knowledgeable in the course curriculum, a user of different learning techniques and a professional instructor who sets an excellent example for students through life long learning. She has been with the College since 1985. |

Patricia is a full-time Secretary at the Lake of the Woods Campus. Patricia demonstrates excellence and enthusiasm in her daily tasks as an ambassador for Confederation College. She is willing to take initiative by organizing events and planning graduation for the campus. |

Mary Burak started with the College as a part-time support staff in 1989 until she received the full-time Administrative Assistant position to the Dean of the Business Division in 1991. She kept on moving up with Administrative Assistant positions to the Dean of Finance and Administration, next to the President and currently to the President and the Board of Governors. Patsy StadnykRecipient of the 2006
Patsy Stadnyk is a full-time clerk and has been with the College for twenty-one years previously in Food Services and the Registrar’s Office but currently with the Learning Centre/Student Success Department. Patsy demonstrates excellence in her daily tasks and her contribution to student success. On top of helping students she is also willing to take initiative to organize events and gift collections for colleagues’ retirements and other occasions. |
Sally MalickiRecipient of the 2006
Sally is a part-time instructor of the Personal Support Worker Program through the Centre for Continuing Education. She has been a Registered Nurse with 40 years in the health care field. Sally has been teaching with the College since 1989. She is knowledgeable and experienced in the Health Care and Nursing field. She is learner centered by being flexible, adaptable and creative. |

Brian Campbell is one of those rare individuals who can work and live in the same community for over 30 years, deal with a multitude of people in government, and business and still receive only positive accolades. Time after time he goes out of his way to bring success to a student, college manager, employee or community organization, never seeking praise, recognition or awards for his work. He is the first to applaud and support someone else’s accomplishments and achievements, and the time has definitely come for him to receive the recognition he deserves. |
James EastwoodRecipient of the 2005
James Eastwood began his career at Confederation College in 1974 in the Theatre Program. Over the past 30 years, James has made many valuable contributions to the Broadcasting and Film Production Programs. He is known for developing specialized teaching techniques that became a milestone of teaching for faculty in the Film Production Program. James always gave unlimited time to his students and peers when helping to develop the Film and Broadcasting programs. He brought out the best quality in student’s work, even if he didn’t agree with their script. Throughout his college career, James made an impact that will never be forgotten by his students and peers. |
Lucie LehouxRecipient of the 2005
Lucie has worked for the College in a variety of positions ranging from Training Consultant with the Ontario Skills Development Office to Employment Advisor, with Job Connect, Employment Programs division. Lucie holds a Bachelor in Business Administration from Laval University and is fully bilingual. She is known for her friendly and helpful attitude and serves clients by acknowledging them by name when they enter the room. |

Elizabeth joined the department of Continuing Education in 1991, working in various positions related to the Developmental Services Worker program. This included in-class instruction, field work supervision, distance education instruction and course development. Elizabeth is recognized for her ability to incorporate real life examples into course curriculum. Jeff HowieRecipient of the 2004
Jeff came to the College in 1988 and held various positions before becoming supervisor of the Learning Centre in 1999. Many students have commented that their success at the College was due in part to the support and guidance provided by Jeff. He has the natural ability to make every student who comes into the Learning Centre feel that they are valued, appreciated and understood. Jeff is actively involved in the community by raising awareness of disability issues and he has served as a role model for not only the students of Confederation College, but also for the College’s employees as well. |
Gary DuizendstraalRecipient of the 2004
Gary has made it his passion to understand his programs and to continually adapt them to meet the changing needs of his students. He has the ability to convey complex material in a manner that is both educational and enjoyable for the student. Gary stays in tune with changes in the industry through his involvement in the local Heavy Duty Mechanic College Curriculum Committee and the Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprenticeship Committee. Also, Gary has designed and developed curriculum for several apprenticeship and post secondary programs. Gary is an exceptional teacher and both his students and his colleagues respect him for his many contributions to the program. |

Jeff began teaching part-time in the Paramedic program in 1999. By delivering lectures that are vivid and precise, Jeff has the ability to capture the attention of the students and stimulate their interest and desire to learn. Jeff illustrates his commitment to life-long learning by taking recertification courses each year in order to up-grade his professional certificates and licenses. He is dedicated to his profession and truly enjoys passing on his expertise to his students. |
Lillian VollumRecipient of the 2004 Lillian has brought a thoughtful, professional approach to each of her work projects and has served as a model for providing quality customer service at the College since 1994. Lillian goes out of her way to provide assistance in a timely manner, especially when providing service to the College’s English as a Second Language and international learners. Lillian is committed to “lifelong learning” as a means of staying current with all College issues. When it comes to “going the extra mile”, few exemplify this better than Lillian Vollum. |

Cathy started her career at Confederation College in 1987 and she has been Manager of Admissions and Registration since February 1999. Cathy’s utilizes her knowledge and positive attitude to provide a range of advice to both staff and students. Cathy represents the College on admission committees and she plays an active role within the College Registrars and Liaison Officers Association. Cathy sets an excellent example for her colleagues with her sense of humour and her poise while under pressure. Cathy has used her forward thinking and vision to inspire her staff and she is a worthy recipient of this award. |
Dave KawaharaRecipient of the 2003
Dave began teaching at the Confederation College on a sessional basis in September of 1998. In August 2000, Dave was appointed to full-time faculty. Dave has earned the respect of his students with his professionalism and knowledge. He is always eager and willing to stop what he is doing in order to help a student who is in need of assistance or guidance. Dave has stated that the most rewarding part of being a teacher is being able to create a lesson plan that puts a smile on the faces of his students. It is his passion for teaching and his commitment to student success that makes Dave Kawahara an excellent role model for students and a worthy recipient of this award. |
Vilma FiliceRecipient of the 2003
Vilma began working at Confederation College in June of 2000 as a student employee and has since moved on to her current position as a Support Services Officer in the Learning Centre. Vilma is sensitive to the challenges faced by students with disabilities and she has delivered courses and awareness workshops to the College community. Vilma’s involvement in College activities includes volunteering at the annual children’s Christmas part, the Chaplain’s spaghetti dinner and staffing College displays at community and recruitment events. Vilma is committed to lifelong learning and is working towards earning her Masters Degree. Vilma has maintained a high professional image while making outstanding contributions to student success. |
