Board of Governors' Employee Awards of Excellence

Award Overview

The Board of Governors' Employee Awards of Excellence are dedicated to employees who have demonstrated great excellence in their daily tasks; have contributed to student success; demonstrated commitment to their own professional development; and made a contribution to the goals of their department and to the mission of the College.

Awards will be presented to one full-time and one part-time employee in each group (Faculty, Administrative and Support), as determined by a college panel.

You are strongly encouraged to nominate and recognize those staff members who are most deserving of this high honour at Confederation College.

Winners will receive ...

  1. a credit of a $1,000 for professional development,
  2. a recognition plaque from the College,
  3. and be recognized for their efforts at the Annual Employee Recognition Event.

Recipient of the 2023 Administrative Award of Excellence

Colin began working for Confederation College in 2011 first as the Director of Applied Research. Colin currently holds the position of Dean, School of Aviation, Engineering Technology, and Trades. Colin’s nomination for the Award of Excellence was supported by 17 nominators. He is described as a creative individual who supports his team by providing them with the tools and resources they need to be successful. He actively pursues collaborative opportunities that will help to ensure student success and always has the best interests of his team and our students in mind. He is a strong leader who is willing to listen, discuss ideas openly and honestly, and acts with integrity. He provides feedback to his team members and doesn’t miss an opportunity to ask how things are going despite his school being one of the largest.

Brett began teaching as a full-time faculty member in 2014 and is the current Program Coordinator for the International Business Management program. Prior to that, he taught on a part time basis with Confederation College beginning in 2012. Brett has received nominations for the Award of Excellence consecutively over the past 3 years and received a total of 4 separate nominations this year. He is described as a moral and motivating professional. He considers the needs of his students and does what he can to ensure they succeed. Students look forward to attending his classes which are described as fun, interesting, and informative. He builds strong, genuine relationships with those in his class. Brett is passionate about sustainability and shares incorporates the information into the classroom wherever he can. He actively works within the College community to promote sustainability and further the College’s commitment to the SDG accord.

Recipient of the 2023 Support Staff Award of Excellence

Rose has been employed with Confederation College for over 10 years. She currently holds the position of Lead Integration Facilitator within the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) program. Rose consistently takes a strengths-based, person-centered, biopsychosocial approach when supporting students in overcoming their challenges and creating plans for students’ success. She doesn’t give up and when Plan A doesn’t work, she always has Plan B in her back pocket. She is a strong advocate for the students of CICE and does so in a kind and respectful way. She is a strong leader to the CICE team. She is described as enthusiastic, patient, fair, flexible, respectful and humorous. She takes the time to understand people, both students and coworkers and makes them feel like valued individuals and helps them to succeed in whatever way she can. She is proud to be an employee of the college and is the biggest cheerleader for the CICE program.

Anne began working full time with Confederation College in 2002 and currently hold the position of Dean of School of Business, Hospitality and Media Arts. In Anne’s time with the College she has created many meaningful connections both internally and with community partners. She has a true passion for her profession and is committed to the Confederation College community. She has shown herself to be a true leader both for staff and students, her style is to provide enough autonomy for individuals to work to the best of their abilities while maintaining an open-door policy to provide guidance when needed. She is an individual who is described as professional, positive, inclusive and an advocate for teamwork.

Tammy has been employed with Confederation College for over 30 years and currently works as the Program Officer for Distance Education. Tammy works hard to ensure that students are supported throughout their educational journey. She is kind, patient and always willing to go above and beyond to foster an environment that supports student success and wellbeing. Her coworkers describe her as a wonderful person to work with to brings forward “out of the box” ideas to provide Distance Education students with the same opportunities and experiences as those who are on campus. She is an excellent team member and gets along well with others. She makes an effort to plan virtual lunches and get togethers so the staff in the department can stay connected and feel included even when located in different offices. She is is a fantastic representative for Confederation College, whether it is while communicating with students, co-workers, supervisors, or community partners.

Laura began teaching as a full-time faculty member in 2011. Before that time, she had taught on a part time basis with Confederation College. Laura is described as a dedicated hard worker who always goes the extra mile. She demonstrates professionalism in all her relationships with students, peers and other members of the College community. She works to make sure that students experience learning that is meaningful, relevant, and effective. She is always open to new ideas, projects or initiatives and looks for ways to promote quality education. She has demonstrated a commitment to learning and incorporating ILOs into the Academic Upgrading courses and works with her team to help them do the same. She also values inter-departmental partnerships and has taken the time to help with the Environmental Technology field school in getting samples and analysing them. She demonstrates a “get to know you” approach to interacting with her students so that she can connect with individuals and ensure that she is providing the best for each person’s needs.

Mike began working full time with Confederation College in 2018 and holds the position of Director of Public Safety. In addition, Mike works teaching part time within the Police Foundations course. In Mike’s time at the college, he has built strong relationships and made many positive changes. This past year has been challenging for many of us and through this, Mike has worked tirelessly to ensure that students and staff are provided with a safe place to learn and work. Mike has played a significant role in crafting a plan which has allowed returning to work/school a possibility. This is no easy task during a situation that is constantly evolving and changing. Mike has lead in such a way that inspires trust and confidence, he is the type of person that you know will be in your corner when needed. He addresses everyone’s concerns seriously and with respect all while making people feel at ease.

Greg has been working at Confederation College since 2016 as an Employment Advisor with Northwest Employment Works in Marathon. Throughout his employment, Greg has continuously engaged a client-centric mindset while working with clients regarding their employment needs. He has a strong network among the Northshore and understands the importance of service coordination and working with community partners to best serve clients and equipping himself with information to refer students in the right direction. Some of his biggest strengths are his ability to network and build lasting relationships with coworkers, clients, students, as well as members of the general public. Greg is a strong advocate for professional development and continuous learning and is currently completing a Human Resources Diploma program. Greg wears his role at as a badge of honour and consistently tells everyone how proud he is to be employed by Confederation College.

Trudi began her full time teaching career at Confederation College within the School of Health, Negahneewin & Community Services  in August 2003. Currently, she is the Program Coordinator for the Dental Hygiene program. Trudi has worked to ensure that her program promotes professionalism, quality and academic success at a high level. She guides students to their absolute best and works hard to ensure that she supports her students in every way possible. She brings a creative and innovative way to teaching which ensures students remain engaged and get the most out of their learning. Over this past year, Trudi has worked to make sure that students were able to continue learning within a safe space. Her dedication to seeing that students could meet their requirements and still adhere to Covid protocols was outstanding.

Rob started teaching at the College in 2019 within the School of Business, Hospitality and Media Arts. He works hard to ensure that all of his students are included in the learning process, often going out of his way to guide them towards success. He recognizes that not all individuals learn the same way or at the same pace and celebrates success for each individual. He demonstrates respect, caring, openness and supports a diverse environment by ensuring that all students feel safe and heard. He ensures timely communication is maintained with students and will research an answer if there is ever a time that he is unsure. Rob’s lessons are engaging, smoothly run and include many real industry examples which is truly appreciated by his students.

Lynn began her employment with Confederation College in 2001 in the Registrar’s office. An alumna of the College, Lynn is aware of the student experience, and how their education can prepare them for a great career in the future. As the Associate Registrar, Lynn provides leadership to a number of areas within the Registrar's department including Admissions, Registration, Financial Aid, Scheduling, and the Information Hub. She has a number of staff who look to her for guidance, as well as peers as she has a long history with the College and is aware of past practices. Lynn has worked in a number of roles within Admissions and Registration, which has provided her with the necessary background knowledge to assist her team, and to change processes to better serve the organization and its students. A fellow colleague noted that she has always been very prompt, responsive, and supportive.

Trevor began his role as Technologist, School of Engineering Technology, Trades & Aviation in 2007. He is committed to student success at the college - he wants the students to have the best experience, the most up-to-date, industry relevant technology to work with, and a safe and secure environment in which to learn. Trevor continues to work with partners like OPG to decommission materials from them in service to the college, saving the college in material goods. Trevor maintains a tip top lab/shop, and continues to work with other support staff to improve both the functioning of the Dorion and the TEC Hub. He acts as a mentor to students and staff, and he demonstrates he cares about the college, our programs, faculty and students.

Tim began his full time teaching career at Confederation College within the School of Engineering Technology, Trades & Aviation in August 2014. Currently, he is the Program Coordinator for the Instrumentation Program. Tim has worked actively to advance student success in a number of ways, most importantly by making sure that the program curriculum and lab equipment advances the skills students will need to be relevant to the job market in northwestern Ontario. He is diligent in finding the best use of limited resources, including building partnerships and developing a network while redesigning the lab. This redesign allowed him to develop collaborative spaces for group work and for discussions. His professional practice is beyond reproach and he continues to show improvements and learning as a natural way of being at the college.

Part-Time Faculty Award of Excellence

 

Christina started teaching at the College in 2016. She has consistently gone above and beyond to assist not only the students in her assigned courses but those in other programs as well. A fellow faculty member noted that Christina treats all students and staff with respect, and has continually proven her caring nature and commitment to learning by stepping up whenever asked. Rather than just simply teaching the courses she is assigned, she works with program faculty to help tailor courses, such as Anatomy & Physiology, to ensure the course followed the programs sequence of content delivery and relevance. Christina works extremely hard, putting in very long hours throughout her sessional contracts, to ensure that the students obtain the best education possible.

Darlene began her employment with Confederation College in 1987 in the Human Resources department. As a long-standing member of the HR team, she is a tremendous asset with the level of corporate knowledge that she has gained. She is able to recall valuable information from the past as it relates to current decisions being made. She has lead numerous processes for the HR department and is always willing to share information and provide guidance when needed. She is considerate of how we affect student success through the decisions and actions we take regarding our human resources. This is evident in the role she plays as part of recruitment and the teaching and guidance she has provided to the many summer and placement students she has supervised. Darlene is described as “a professional individual who works well with others. She has a great sense of humour with is appreciated by all.”

After working in a number of part time positions, Jo-Ann, who is a Confederation College alumna, began her full time role with the Distance Education team in 2011. She is described as someone who is passionate, approachable and simply amazing. Some have referred to her as an octopus, since she has many arms that reach out to so many areas across the province. She has the ability to remember all the different students, locations, test days, etc. She is a solution focused individual and looks at problems as opportunities to overcome. She is a key player in the NCCP as the lead of the testing group ensuring all students are able to write their tests. She engages others in a professional way and is an intrinsic motivator. She is described as someone who is “very perceptive and able to support students in many ways. She is the heart of DE!”

Sally began her full time teaching career at Confederation College within the School of Health, Negahneewin & Community Services in August 2008. She works as part of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program which is in collaboration with Lakehead University. She is described as someone who is “always encouraging students to be the best they can possibly be”. She is always willing to help others demonstrating her openness, great communication, and genuine care for every one of her students and coworkers. Through her courses, she stresses the importance of understanding those who live in Northwestern Ontario and their health needs. She accomplishes this through integration of unique learning opportunities such as community health studies, reflective practice projects and showcase opportunities. She is involved both as a faculty member and in research for not only the BScN program, but also nursing in general. She is someone who “demonstrates the gold standard of professionalism and has been a role model to many individuals here at Confederation College”.

Brenda’s passion for Indigenous Education can be seen through the results of her work and numerous collaborations. Her focus on student success and the values of relationship, respect and caring for all learners has been evidenced through all her roles in the college. From faculty member, curriculum developer, Dean of Negahneewin College and now Vice President of CPRIL -- She has never wavered from her vision. Those who collaborate with Brenda are continually inspired, challenged and grateful to have the opportunity to make positive change and contribute to the betterment of our college, community, and beyond. Negahneewin (meaning leadership in Anishinnabemowin) is not only an ideal, but characterizes accurately Brenda's practice to service excellence that is so much of what she does”.  She is a tireless champion it the pursuit of access, success, and pathways for Indigenous learners. Brenda’s strength of spirit, kindness, and intelligence underlie all she sets out to accomplish. 
 

She has shown tireless dedication and service to the college community including contributing to building committees, serving students and faculty, and mentoring staff is transformational.

Cristal is a Confederation College alumna and has been with the College since 2004. Originally working at the Thunder Bay Campus, in 2012 she accepted a position at our Rainy River Campus which is where she currently works as the Project Assistant.

 

She is a team player who will volunteer to help out her colleagues at a moment’s notice. She’s often described as having the patience of a saint. She is positive, friendly, and approachable. You can always count on a smile and a “Hello!” from her.

 

Cristal always goes above and beyond for our students. Being a central contact for the Dual Credit program, she works with students, college instructors, high school teachers, and administrators alike to help remove any barriers students may face, clearing a path to ensure they can achieve their goals. She has certainly worked to build great relationships and a strong network geared towards student success.

 

Cristal truly acts as a face of the campus within the community. She regularly participates in the planning and execution of events within the college. She is involved with the Confederation Day committee, graduation committee and the 50th Anniversary Committee, as well as the Fort Frances Diversity Committee.

 Alain began his teaching career with Confederation College as a part-time teacher within the School of Business, Hospitality, and Media Arts in 2012. In August 2014, he moved into a full time Professor role and has been appointed as Coordinator for the last 4 academic years. Alain is also an active member of the College REC Committee, planning and organizing employee social events. 
 

Alain is described as someone who is genuinely respectful, professional, and caring with open communication. He has a special way of turning boring methods into easy to remember and creative material. He makes acronyms and uses real life examples that relate not only to the world of business but also the students’ own personal lives. He will discuss the same material in multiple ways so that everyone understands it and encourages students to come to him when they have an issue. He will do everything he can, within reason, to accommodate. Alain not only strives for his own excellence but also his students'. He always brings his full attention and effort to class and inspires students to do the same. He is genuinely respectful towards all students, cares for their education and well-being, and is transparent when it comes to communication.  Alain’s teaching style can easily be summed up in to one word: Quality.

Kind, happy, resourceful, and respectful is how Estella is described by her students. Estella has been teaching part time with Confederation College since 2006 and most recently within Academic Upgrading.
 

She has been an amazing and supportive faculty member throughout her years of teaching at the college. Her students feel that she is always able to answer their questions and concerns. She responds quickly and thoroughly which is greatly appreciated by her students.
 

She conducts herself in a professional manner and her lectures are always informative, in depth, and fun. Her teaching techniques include class activities and incorporate multiple learning styles. Estella recognizes that not every person learns the same way and her students find this very beneficial.

Estella is truly a tireless individual who continues to improve herself and those around her.

Having been employed with Confederation College for over 25 years, one word could describe Lisa – Dedication.

 

As a Support Staff employee, Lisa’s focus was on student support with their research needs. Her goals, initiatives and plans have and remain based on what is best for our students and their success. She believes in each student and in the education that all students receive.

 

Now, as Manager of the Paterson Library Commons, she continues to ensure the library supports students through late night study sessions, new technology and resources. Lisa also assures the testing centre and tutoring options are focused on student support and success. For her co-workers, Lisa ensures they have the opportunities to explore professional development that meets student expectations.

 

Lisa is also a supporter of Indigenous Learning Outcomes, and Diversity on Campus. Lisa excels in career and personal development; earning her Master’s Degree, sitting on several college committees and participating in external provincial and national committees.

 

Lisa strives for excellence in all that she does; from workplace best practices to student satisfaction. Well respected by all, she shows care and concern for our diverse student body, provides clear expectations to co-workers, as well as guidance and a sounding board for fellow managers.

“Send them to me”. These words are spoken with compassion. The individual speaking these words - Mandy Wright.

 

For the School of Engineering Technology and Trades, Mandy is the epitome of an advocate for student success, always available to assist ET&T students in need of advice, guidance or direction. Whether a student is trying to attain missing credits, register for a class, access resources or apply for bursaries, Mandy always has the much needed answers.

 

She embodies all core values of Confederation College and strives for excellence in all that she does, setting the bar high for students, co-workers as well as herself. It is through her drive and encouragement that Mandy has become a strong team member at ET&T. She has been portrayed as kind, caring, open and honest, treating all with professional courtesy, yet she remains very approachable. Playing a vital role, Mandy keeps the School of ET&T connected to the rest of the college. If there are co-workers that have questions that cannot find answers, the easiest way is to “Ask Mandy”! Colleagues and co-workers alike have stated “Our jobs would be substantially more difficult if Mandy wasn’t around”.

Mentor, dedicated, compassionate, enthusiastic, and self-less are 5 words that could describe Nadine Doucette.

 

Her position as a professor in the Human Resources Program has allowed her wealth of knowledge, experiences, advice and guidance to be shared with her students. She has a sincere concern for all students and displays a willingness to help them reach their fullest potential.

 

Nadine gives 150% (if that is at all possible). Classroom discussions are enthusiastic and her lectures sound compassionate and strong. Using a style completely unique to her, she is able to transform complex, confusing subject matter into understandable information and also create an enjoyable experience. If there was a moment during a lecture that her students could not quite grasp, Nadine would calmly respond with “Treat unequal’s unequally to get equal results”.

 

Truly dedicated to her field, Nadine holds a Masters in Leadership, a B.A. in Political Sciences/Pre-Law and a Diploma in Human Resources, and is CEO of a Human Resources Consulting Business. She is not only a role model to her students, but also for her colleagues. She understands the challenges that new professors might encounter and generously gives of herself to mentor and support others. She is a team player and believes that the success of one is the success of all.

 

When approached about Nadine, a former student commented “She is the most approachable faculty member of Confederation College that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She is truly one of a kind”.

 

Daniel Gonzalez

Part-Time Faculty Award of Excellence

 

Starting out as a new graduate from the Instrumentation Engineering Technician- Process Automation Program in Mexico, an International student arrives in Canada to continue studies at Confederation College. Today, that same student is an instructor with the School of Engineering Technology. His name – Daniel Garcia-Gonzales.

 

Daniel has adjusted well to his new surroundings. He has tailored course subject matter to incorporate themes from several courses as well as programming courses, to allow his students to gain insight into programs being used and material yet to come.

 

According to his students, Daniel upholds the attitude; “ You get out what you put in”. He remains very approachable to his students and is always available for consultation through text, email, or phone. He gladly shares advice with his students regarding his courses or courses that are within the scope of his  knowledge. In doing so, he encourages his students to strive to achieve their best work. Professionalism, integrity and resilience serve his students best interest.

 

Described by students and faculty as natural, enthusiastic, and dynamic, Daniel continues to demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning.

 

Truly a tireless individual who continues to improve himself and those around him, we congratulate you on receiving the Award of Excellence for Faculty (Part-time).

An alumnus of Confederation College, Lee started as a Help Desk Technician and was subsequently promoted to Manager IT Customer Services. Due to the many different areas of the College that he supervises, Lee makes an effort to visit each of his departments to touch base and see how things are going with his staff in order to connect with them on a personal level. Lee is constantly making sure that students are at the forefront of his never ending to-do list and going above and beyond to ensure the job gets done right, regardless of how long it takes. Lee is a member of a number of committees including Academic Programs Northern Ontario, as well as making sure our voice is heard in the Ontario Educational Consortium Market Place. His colleagues have mentioned how valued they feel while working with Lee; he has an open door policy and is always willing to listen and ready to offer advice. His value of integrity and desire to improve, expand, and create consumer ready products has had him championing growth and advancement that serve the entire Confederation College community.

Often referred to by her colleagues as a “Jaclyn of All Trades”, Kathy Egan assists with the day-to-day operations of the Fort Frances campus as well as behind the scenes by performing various tasks and projects. Whether it’s arranging Professional Development in Fort Frances through the Thunder Bay campus, implementing tutoring sessions, processing time sheets, scheduling with Contact North, providing up to date timetables, and many other tasks, Kathy’s colleagues know that they can count on her to get the job done.  Kathy herself is a Confederation College alumna and takes our Respect initiative to heart by connecting with all students regardless of age, sex, disability, ethnicity, and background. This makes her instrumental in providing guidance to prospective students as well as current students during their time at Confederation College.  People cannot help by find themselves drawn to Kathy’s warm and welcoming persona.  She is good natured and warm-hearted, volunteering at many organizations including ‘Meals on Wheels’ where she assists in delivering meals to senior citizens in her community.

Leader, compassionate, enthusiastic, advocate, ambassador – these are all words that can be used to describe Frances Bennett-Sutton.  She is a leader in her field as the coordinator of the Environmental Technician program, as well as spearheading a partnership with Lakehead University to promote the Integrated Water program. Compassion and enthusiasm drive Frances each and every day to provide the best environment she possibly can for her students and colleagues. She has taken her students under her wing by expressing an interest in their lives, focusing on their success at Confederation College, or even just offering kind words of advice. Frances also leads by example. She is a strong ally for the Aboriginal community by challenging her students to confront and examine their biases or held beliefs. As well, she has opened her students’ eyes to the privileges and injustices in Canada and beyond. She is also a safeTALK facilitator and is a part of the CPAL initiative for Aboriginal Outcomes, and the Website Renewal committee. Through her actions, she is an Ambassador of the College by living out our mission, vision, and values as well as our Respect initiative.

Part-time Faculty Award of Excellence

 

Matthew is a part-time instructor in the Tourism – Travel & Eco-Adventure program and an alumnus of Lakehead University with his Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Bachelor of Education. He does not hesitate to help students; offering assistance whenever they need it. Not only has his selflessness gained him respect from his students, but also from his colleagues. The amount of work he has taken on has far surpassed the expectations of his position which include throwing himself into travel courses that were brand new to him and just making it work in the best and most educational way possible. Matthew is an innovative leader and active citizen within Thunder Bay winning the ‘Good Citizen of the Year Award’ in 2014 from the City of Thunder Bay, he is Vice President of Leadership Thunder Bay, a YES Employment counselor and workshop facilitator, and he is also on the Sister Cities Committee as well as the Crime Prevention Council. He is a hard-working and dedicated individual, inspiring others – including his students – to become actively involved in the community.

Anita Price

Recipient of the 2015 Administrative Award of Excellence

Anita Price has been with the Children and Family Centre since 1982. Working in positions of increasing responsibility over the next few years, Anita became Supervisor of the Centre in 1992 and Manager in 1997. Anita is described as an excellent role model and mentor to other child care supervisors. She regularly leads workshops for other organizations and sits on numerous committees related to early-years programs. Anita is a leader in every way, including environmental education, teaching children about vegetables and gardening and how they form a part of meals. Anita’s employees describe her as a good listener, fair and supportive of their strengths, capabilities and goals. One of her nominators said you could describe Anita in one word: unpretentious, in that she would never ask her staff to do anything she isn’t prepared to do herself. She is a hands on leader who commands respect because of her gentle but firm nature.

Margy Pedersen

Margy Pederson began her employment at the College on a part time basis in 2000, and in 2003 was hired as a full time receptionist in the Centre for Continuing Education. She is currently a Senior Program Support Specialist. Margy is well known for her exceptional customer service, communications and interpersonal skills, and is described as warm and caring by her nominators. She regularly volunteers at graduation ceremonies, enthusiastically greeting every student with a smile. Passionate about student success, Margy works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that everything is in place for students prior to the start of class. Margy is also known for maintaining interest lists and contacting students when classes are offered that interest them. Margy is referred to as a “Banner specialist” and often provides tips and tricks to others to help make their jobs easier.

Giannina Veltri

Giannina Veltri is a professor and coordinator in the Tourism-Travel and Eco-Adventure program. A seasoned veteran of the tourism industry, Giannina has traveled the world the equivalent of three times, enabling her to teach from firsthand experience. Giannina is described in her nomination as a “highly supportive and encouraging” role model for students. Devoting endless hours on evenings and weekends, Giannina works hard to ensure she is current with all new material related to her program. She is a leader in alternative delivery, using Blackboard Collaborate to deliver her program to students in both Northern and Southern Ontario. A champion at ensuring access, Giannina has included exchange students and CICE participants to her classes, and boasts a high level of retention and graduation statistics.

Melanie Edison

Melanie Edison teaches part-time in the Medical Radiation Technology program. Melanie received three separate nominations from thirteen different students for this award. Melanie is described as a teacher that “shows tremendous respect for each and every one of her students and is always approachable and caring for student academic needs.” Melanie’s students speak to her ability to create a “creative and effective learning environment” and her willingness to go the extra mile to provide student support. One student stated, “I have had many, many teachers in my 5 years of post-secondary education and Melanie is at the top of the list for teachers whom have made a difference in my student life.”

Diane Genereux

Diane is one of our Salary and Benefits Assistants in the Human Resources Department.  Diane is described as professional, caring, friendly, engaging and personable. A quote from her nomination reads “she is willing to assist anyone who comes through the office.  Whether it be a staff member or student, she will stop what she is doing to accommodate."

Karen Kemp

Karen is the Program Coordinator of the Community Integration through Co-operative Education Program (CICE). Karen was chosen because of her excellence in teaching, which is reflected though her personal commitment to student learning and growth and the development of new teaching methods.

A graduate of the College, Dayna is described as the “hub” of the operation and deals with every aspect of ACE.

Anne Mauro

Recipient of the 2013 Administrative Award of Excellence

 

Anne is the Assistant to Vice President, Student and Corporate Services. She is described as someone who always makes everyone she deals with feel comfortable and welcome with her warm smile, positive can-do attitude and caring manner. Anne also plays an essential role for the Thunder Bay convocation ceremony by coordinating the green room activities. She was co-chair of the Thunderhawks women's hockey spaghetti dinner fundraiser and has been active on a plethora of other college events. A demonstrated lifelong learner, Anne recently graduated from Lakehead University with a Bachelors of Arts with a major in Political Science.  

Richard Tatebe

Richard teaches in our Social Services Worker and Concurrent disorders programs and is the Coordinator for the 2012-2113 Academic year. Richard is described as a passionate educator who consistently demonstrates a high level of energy and enthusiasm in everything he does. He has represented faculty on the SUCCI Board, and has jointed the Academic Council. He has growing interest in the area of Aboriginal student retention and will pursue his Doctoral studies to further study Aboriginal Learning Outcomes.

Shelley Leeson

Shelly is one of our Program Officers in the Centre for Continuing Education. She demonstrates enthusiasm for her job on a daily basis. She takes on all new tasks and roles without hesitation and gets the job done professionally and in a timely manner. She is committed to acting as an ambassador for the College, treating everyone including staff, faculty, students and co-workers with respect.

Peter Rusak

Peter is retired from is career as a  high school teacher and has made his way to sharing his wisdom and skills in the College's Academic Upgrading program. Peter's nomination was initiated by his students in the program, which is a testament to his passion for teaching. He was also an integral part in the revision of the math curriculum. He can be counted on to participate in committees and activities in Academic Upgrading. Peter participates in the organizing of Recognition Day, coordinates social gatherings for faculty and staff and he volunteers to sit on other committees as needed.

Gail Murdock

Gail Murdock has been at Confederation College for 23 years.  She has worn multiple hats throughout her tenure including Faculty member, Regional Campus Manager, Associate Dean and her current role of Dean, School of Business, Hospitality and Media Arts.
Gail acts as an ambassador for the College in attending community functions and is a representative on a number of committees, all of which she approaches with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a willingness to help.  Her remarkable way of engaging with students, interacting with administrators, communicating with faculty, and motivating peers has earned her the trust and respect of all those around her. Students and staff describe her as “very approachable”.  Gail’s personality makes it very comfortable for people to discuss anything with her.  She has the ability to demonstrate compassion and empathy for anyone she engages with, whether it is a student or a staff member.  

Judy Barton

Judy Barton is a faculty member and currently coordinator of Academic Upgrading, Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) and Personal Career Development (PCD), she acts as a mentor, to students and to new teachers, in Thunder Bay and in the region.
One student described Judy as a teacher who “always pushed me to do my best.  What I loved about how she taught is that she was very honest with me”.  One of Judy’s peers described Judy as “an exemplary employee who demonstrates leadership, professionalism, collegial goodwill and a joy for teaching, learning and growing”. 
Judy is a natural leader and a lifelong learner participating in professional development opportunities whenever possible.  She is active in a variety of committees and working groups both at the College and in the community.  Judy has taken on important leadership work at the College – participating on Academic Council, the Research Ethics Review Sub-Committee, the Academic Success Committee and numerous selection committees.  She also currently serves as the Chair of the Thunder Bay Literacy Board and until recently was a member of Literacy Northwest.

Michael Dorval

As the College’s Architectural/Engineering Technician, Michael has been making people’s ideas and sometimes even dreams come true at Confederation College over the past 11 years. 
He is regarded as a highly dedicated professional who knows how to motivate contractors to get projects done on time and on budget, yet he remains humble and approachable and is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs it.  Playing a major role with his most recent project, Michael, with the countless hours of collaboration and expertise from so many others, made the multi-million dollar dream of REACH a reality.

Lynda McKeown

Part time Award of Excellence

 

Lynda McKeown has been a part of Confederation College’s Program for 36 years.  She has served on the Confederation College Advisory Committee, the Thunder Bay Dental Hygiene Association, and the Ontario Dental Hygienists Association.  Lynda has also served as President of both the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association and the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario.  She is in fact, the first Dental Hygienist to practise in Thunder Bay. 
After graduating from the University of Toronto as a Hygienist, she completed her HBA in Philosophy and Ethics, and her MA in Sociology.  Lynda’s knowledge and experience has enabled her to give all she has learned back to her students by creating an environment where she consistently presents herself in a professional manner.  Students learn from Lynda’s informative storytelling and reports of past events that have affected Dental Hygiene in Ontario and throughout Canada.

Ron Vopni

Ron Vopni has worked for the College for over 30 years in a quiet, yet professional way. As the Director of Facilities and Ancillary Services, Ron demonstrates excellence in his daily tasks. He has a quiet and effective leadership style that doesn't go unnoticed in his department. He takes on large projects, such as REACH, which is on time and on budget. To quote his nominators "to Ron, leadership is serious business. . Managers who report to Ron say they feel valued and trusted. They describe Ron as a coach and mentor - who inspires and motivates others." Ron consistently uses the aims of student success to make decisions - the many stages of student services renovations over the years was always guided by Ron's long term commitment to what was best for students.

Barb Morrison

Barb Morrison teaches in the Practical Nursing Program. She has en extensive health care background which includes medical and surgical nursing, adult and pediatric intensive care, general pediatrics, long term care, rehabilitation and chronic care. Barb's nominators describe her as "an educational visionary" for the work she has performed in helping our College develop REACH. REACH simulation labs have become a state-of-the-art facility with the help of Barb.

She is a leader in the use of simulation in practice labs and encourages its use as a means by which nursing students learn in a safe, creative environment that helps students to develop his or her assessment skills, critical thinking and self-confidence in clinical practice and beyond. Barb is also involved in a variety of community partners and organizations. Students and colleagues enjoy working and learning from Barb. She is an inspiration and is dedicated to student's success.

Peter Isosaari

Peter Isosaari works as a Financial Analyst in the Financial Services department. His nominators describe him as "a friendly and positive staff member who has a calm, yet professional rapport with just about everyone he works with." His nominators also state "Peter always surpasses objectives and provides timely, automated solutions to a myriad of problems." Peter puts himself in the students and internal clients "shoes".  One nominator states that "problem solving is one of his strengths." Peter is an active member of SSALT and is committed to bringing financial advice to the academic team. He has a strong dedication to the overall strategic direction of the College and he focuses on doing the right thing and is very collegial when assistance is required.

Marjorie Kinnunen

Marjorie Kinnunen has dedicated more than 24 years to the College, working in a number of roles.  She currently holds the position of Registrar.  Marjorie has been described as a person who displays devotion to leadership, customer service, the College and its students, and to her own professional development. Marjorie was the team lead for the implementation of Student Banner. She recently furthered her education by receiving her Human Resources Management post diploma. Marjorie creates an open and honest environment for her staff to progress in and supports them in every way possible. 

Michele McManus

Michele McManus, Professor and Coordinator of the Broadcasting Television Production Program, was described in her nomination as an “effective educational leader”. Her commitment to student success and quality education is exhibited in her interaction with students and colleagues alike.   Michele meets with students individually each semester to see how they are doing and to give constructive feedback to ensure their success in the program. In addition, Michele played a major role in the rebuilding of the Broadcast facility through CAMP and aided in the development of a new curriculum for the program. Michele is admired by both students and co-workers. 

Enrico Pucci

Enrico Pucci is an AV Technician in the Computer Services Department. Enrico’s nomination describes how he provides a high level of customer service to everyone he encounters.  He is also portrayed as a very friendly, positive, and creative individual. Enrico displays a strong dedication to his work and is always willing to go above and beyond his expectations. In addition to his work, Enrico volunteers at the Children’s Christmas party, has helped to build floats for the Christmas parade, and is also active in the community.

Vince Stilla

Vince Stilla has been a member of the College community since 1991 and is currently the Director of the Centre for Continuing Education. In this position he provides his clients and staff with enthusiasm and positive reinforcement which encourages all who encounter him and his attitude to strive for the top. Vince plays a vital role in the college community where he acts as an ambassador for Confederation College by marketing and spreading his knowledge and skills to all departments and regional areas. Vince exemplifies what is means to be a knowledgeable, student and staff centered employee of the College.

Leslie Sutherland

Leslie Sutherland, who teaches in the Collaborative Nursing Program, has been portrayed as a student centered, life long learner. The nomination described Leslie as someone who thrives on producing innovative instruction to keep her students focused and interested in all aspect of nursing and learning. Over the past several years Leslie focused her energy and stamina towards the agreement between Lakehead University and Confederation College’s Collaborative Nursing Program which has just been signed. Leslie has been with the College since 1977.

Joe Donlon

Joe Donlon is a Distance Education Technician for the Centre for Continuing Education. Joe delivers outstanding customer service to all of his clients with a willingness to be consistent and to go beyond expectations of these clients he exhibits true compassion and dedication. He is well known in the College community due to his persistence with planning and assisting with College events. Joe has been with the College since 2003.

Sue Hoffman

Sue Hoffman has worked as part time faculty since 2006.  She is currently teaching in Negahneewin College of Academic and Community Development.  Sue has taught a wide array of subjects including Introductory Psychology, Community Development, Social Welfare, and Student Success. She has been described by students as an approachable teacher who understands subject matter which enables her to relay it confidently to students which motivates and encourages them.

Shari MacKenzie has been a full time administrative employee since January 8, 1996.  Shari is always leading in a positive and upbeat manner. Encouraging her and other staff to approach change in a positive manner focusing on the end outcome and how it can best serve our students and staff at Confederation College. Fellow colleagues and her staff often come to her for advice and or direction and compliment her on her management skills.

Tim Matthews

Tim Matthews has been a full time faculty member since September 2, 1986.  Tim is always suited in his chef whites displaying a confident and professional chef and teacher image. Tim also ensures his students follow the same protocol. Tim demonstrates exciting and new dishes as a finished product so the students can be excited about the dish they are preparing. Tim also pulls into the classroom his colourful previous experience on an international level as to excite the students about the potential opportunities in the hospitality field.

Janet Arinobu

Janet Arinobu has been a full time support staff employee since November 9, 1987.  Janet has shown enthusiasm and dedication to her job consistently throughout her employment with Confederation College.  Whether she is dealing with a student, a colleague, or an external customer, Janet can always be counted on to treat the client with respect; to respond efficiently, accurately and professionally; and to leave the client feeling positive about the encounter.

Marsha Hansen

Marsha began her thirty-four year career in 1971 as a Keypunch Operator in the Computer Centre.   She and now assists staff in the Human Resources Services Department as a Salary and Benefits Assistant. Marsha’s nomination highlights how she excels in the area of customer service, and carries out all of her tasks in an expert manner. She exemplifies what it means to be a knowledgeable, student and staff-centered employee of the College.

Jacquie Cottingham

Jacquie, who teaches in the General Arts and Science Program, has been portrayed as student-centered, knowledgeable in the course curriculum, a user of different learning techniques and a professional instructor who sets an excellent example for students through life long learning. She has been with the College since 1985.

Patricia Percy

Patricia is a full-time Secretary at the Lake of the Woods Campus. Patricia demonstrates excellence and enthusiasm in her daily tasks as an ambassador for Confederation College. She is willing to take initiative by organizing events and planning graduation for the campus.

Mary Burak

Mary Burak started with the College as a part-time support staff in 1989 until she received the full-time Administrative Assistant position to the Dean of the Business Division in 1991. She kept on moving up with Administrative Assistant positions to the Dean of Finance and Administration, next to the President and currently to the President and the Board of Governors. Mary excels in the area of customer service, and carries out all of her tasks in an expert manner. She exemplifies what it means to be a knowledgeable, student and staff-centered employee of the College.

Bonnie Rikkonen

Bonnie, who teaches in the Early Childhood Education Program was chosen by the committee to receive the Employee Award of Excellence. Bonnie’s nomination was student driven. Her students have portrayed her to be student-centered, knowledgeable in the course curriculum, a user of different learning techniques and a professional instructor who loves children and teaching.

Patsy Stadnyk

Patsy Stadnyk is a full-time clerk and has been with the College for twenty-one years previously in Food Services and the Registrar’s Office but currently with the Learning Centre/Student Success Department. Patsy demonstrates excellence in her daily tasks and her contribution to student success. On top of helping students she is also willing to take initiative to organize events and gift collections for colleagues’ retirements and other occasions.

Sally Malicki

Sally is a part-time instructor of the Personal Support Worker Program through the Centre for Continuing Education. She has been a Registered Nurse with 40 years in the health care field. Sally has been teaching with the College since 1989. She is knowledgeable and experienced in the Health Care and Nursing field. She is learner centered by being flexible, adaptable and creative.

Brian Campbell

Brian Campbell is one of those rare individuals who can work and live in the same community for over 30 years, deal with a multitude of people in government, and business and still receive only positive accolades. Time after time he goes out of his way to bring success to a student, college manager, employee or community organization, never seeking praise, recognition or awards for his work. He is the first to applaud and support someone else’s accomplishments and achievements, and the time has definitely come for him to receive the recognition he deserves.

James Eastwood

James Eastwood began his career at Confederation College in 1974 in the Theatre Program. Over the past 30 years, James has made many valuable contributions to the Broadcasting and Film Production Programs.  He is known for developing specialized teaching techniques that became a milestone of teaching for faculty in the Film Production Program.  James always gave unlimited time to his students and peers when helping to develop the Film and Broadcasting programs.  He brought out the best quality in student’s work, even if he didn’t agree with their script.  Throughout his college career, James made an impact that will never be forgotten by his students and peers.

Lucie Lehoux

Lucie has worked for the College in a variety of positions ranging from Training Consultant with the Ontario Skills Development Office to Employment Advisor, with Job Connect, Employment Programs division. Lucie holds a Bachelor in Business Administration from Laval University and is fully bilingual. She is known for her friendly and helpful attitude and serves clients by acknowledging them by name when they enter the room.

Arlea Camarotto

Arlea has worked in twelve College departments including: Registrar, Cafeteria Services, Learning Centre, Financial Aid and Career Development Centre. Throughout her employment at Confederation College, Arlea has built a solid reputation as a hard working, personable, committed, reliable and caring employee.   Arlea’s extensive and varied work experience in numerous departments has enabled her to develop a broad knowledge base and a sound understanding of Confederation College.

Elizabeth Bishop

Elizabeth joined the department of Continuing Education in 1991, working in various positions related to the Developmental Services Worker program.  This included in-class instruction, field work supervision, distance education instruction and course development.  Elizabeth is recognized for her ability to incorporate real life examples into course curriculum.  Students have commented that her motivational abilities make the classroom an exciting learning environment.

Jeff Howie

Jeff came to the College in 1988 and held various positions before becoming supervisor of the Learning Centre in 1999.  Many students have commented that their success at the College was due in part to the support and guidance provided by Jeff.  He has the natural ability to make every student who comes into the Learning Centre feel that they are valued, appreciated and understood.  Jeff is actively involved in the community by raising awareness of disability issues and he has served as a role model for not only the students of Confederation College, but also for the College’s employees as well.

Gary Duizendstraal

Gary has made it his passion to understand his programs and to continually adapt them to meet the changing needs of his students.  He has the ability to convey complex material in a manner that is both educational and enjoyable for the student.  Gary stays in tune with changes in the industry through his involvement in the local Heavy Duty Mechanic College Curriculum Committee and the Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprenticeship Committee.  Also, Gary has designed and developed curriculum for several apprenticeship  and post secondary programs.  Gary is an exceptional teacher and both his students and his colleagues respect him for his many contributions to the program. 

Jeff Monas

Jeff began teaching part-time in the Paramedic program in 1999.  By delivering lectures that are vivid and precise, Jeff has the ability to capture the attention of the students and stimulate their interest and desire to learn.  Jeff illustrates his commitment to life-long learning by taking recertification courses each year in order to up-grade his professional certificates and licenses.  He is dedicated to his profession and truly enjoys passing on his expertise to his students.

Lillian Vollum

Lillian has brought a thoughtful, professional approach to each of her work projects and has served as a model for providing quality customer service at the College since 1994.  Lillian goes out of her way to provide assistance in a timely manner, especially when providing service to the College’s English as a Second Language and international learners.  Lillian is committed to “lifelong learning” as a means of staying current with all College issues.  When it comes to “going the extra mile”, few exemplify this better than Lillian Vollum.

Cathy started her career at Confederation College in 1987 and she has been Manager of Admissions and Registration since February 1999.  Cathy’s utilizes her knowledge and positive attitude to provide a range of advice to both staff and students.  Cathy represents the College on admission committees and she plays an active role within the College Registrars and Liaison Officers Association.  Cathy sets an excellent example for her colleagues with her sense of humour and her poise while under pressure.  Cathy has used her forward thinking and vision to inspire her staff and she is a worthy recipient of this award.

Dave Kawahara

Dave began teaching at the Confederation College on a sessional basis in September of 1998.  In August 2000, Dave was appointed to full-time faculty.  Dave has earned the respect of his students with his professionalism and knowledge.  He is always eager and willing to stop what he is doing in order to help a student who is in need of assistance or guidance.  Dave has stated that the most rewarding part of being a teacher is being able to create a lesson plan that puts a smile on the faces of his students.  It is his passion for teaching and his commitment to student success that makes Dave Kawahara an excellent role model for students and a worthy recipient of this award.

Vilma Filice

Support Award of Excellence

 

Vilma began working at Confederation College in June of 2000 as a student employee and has since moved on to her current position as a Support Services Officer in the Learning Centre.  Vilma is sensitive to the challenges faced by students with disabilities and she has delivered courses and awareness workshops to the College community.  Vilma’s involvement in College activities includes volunteering at the annual children’s Christmas part, the Chaplain’s spaghetti dinner and staffing College displays at community and recruitment events.  Vilma is committed to lifelong learning and is working towards earning her Masters Degree.  Vilma has maintained a high professional image while making outstanding contributions to student success.
