Negahneewin Library collection

The Negahneewin Collection is a project with a long history in the Paterson Library Commons. The roots of this project started with an informal book club in 2007, which was formally developed into the Negahneewin Reading Series in 2016, and later led to a project to reclassify and relocate the library’s extensive collection of Indigenous resources. The idea for the Negahneewin collection was created in collaboration with the Negahneewin Council, the former Negahneewin Research Centre, and with consultation and contributions from Elders and internal stakeholders.

In 2020, Indigenous resources which had previously been dispersed throughout the collection were pulled together and relocated to create the Negahneewin Collection – with a dedicated space and signage to identify the collection. Unlike other portions of the Library’s book collection, where outdated material is regularly removed, the Negahneewin Collection has a historic lens, where older material has been retained to provide historical context to learners in our programs. Behind the scenes, library staff have also worked to remove outdated subject headings and implement new Indigenous terminology so that material is easier to find in our online catalogue.  The Negahneewin Collection continues to grow as new material with a focus on local, regional, and national Indigenous topics is added to the collection on a regular basis.

The Negahneewin Collection can be found on the second floor of the Paterson Library Commons.
