Mental Health and Well Being (Student Success Centre)

Confederation College strives to be an organization that enables all of its members to realize their potential for mental health and well-being in an environment conducive to learning, working, living and connecting with others. It is recognized that all students require support for mental health and well-being, and that all faculty and staff, full and part-time, require supports for their own mental health and well-being in order to fully support the mental health and well-being of students. It is hoped that the mental health and well-being of all members of the College community can be addressed strategically as part of the on going work of the Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy Committee, in conjunction with partners like the Workplace Wellness Committee and Human Resources.

MENTAL HEALTH CAN BE DEFINED AS:

“The capacities of each and all of us to feel, think, and act in ways that enhance our ability to enjoy life and deal with the challenges we face. It is a positive sense of emotional and spiritual well-being that respects the importance of culture, equity, social justice, interconnections, and personal dignity” (Government of Canada, 2006).

MENTAL WELL-BEING CAN BE DEFINED AS:

“A dynamic process, in which a person's external circumstances interact with their psychological resources to satisfy — to a greater or lesser extent — their psychological needs and to give rise to positive feelings of happiness and satisfaction.” (New Economics Association, n.d.) (MacKean, 2011, p.11).

Bridging the Distance

Bridging the Distance is a collaborative research project developed by 4 Northern Ontario colleges. As part of this project, Confederation College has set up comfortable video-equipped office spaces at each of the regional campuses. These offices allow regional students to access counselling and other student services offered by providers in Thunder Bay. Through this technology, faculty members in Thunder Bay are also able to meet face-to-face privately with students from any of the regional campuses.
