Equity, Diversity & Student Appeals

The Equity Diversity, Inclusion, and Student Appeals Advisor offers a safe, confidential space for you to express concerns or issues you are facing, offering information, insight, and support on several things.

The Advisor can:

  • Support you in the academic appeals process if you suspect you have been graded unfairly;

  • Clarify relevant policies and procedures of Confederation College;

  • Listen to and look into concerns around diversity, equity, and inclusion;

  • Help you build skills to deal more effectively and directly with your concerns;

  • Offer referral to resources both on and off campus; and

  • Give insight into strategies for conflict resolution.

That said, the Advisor cannot:

  • Decide who is right or wrong in situations of conflict, nor take sides;

  • Provide legal advice or psychological counselling;

  • Overrule or change a decision; or

  • Determine or change policy.

Five Tips for Conflict Resolution:

  1. Be prepared. Write down all your questions, concerns. Bring any related documentation with you to meetings.

  2. Ask questions, particularly those that will help you understand the other person’s perspective and their rationale. 

  3. Keep good records and take notes, including names and times of any relevant interactions.

  4. Try and approach conflict with a positive, solution-focused mindset.

  5. Self-reflect and recognize both your own accountability as well as that of others.
