Guiding Principles

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – which identified 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an urgent call for action by all countries to achieve sustainable development. The SDGs recognize that ending world-wide poverty and deprivations go together with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve oceans and forests. In April 2021 Confederation College became the second post-secondary institution in Ontario to sign the SDG Accord. The SDG Accord was developed by the post-secondary sector in Canada to inspire, celebrate and advance the critical role that education has in delivering the SDGs. Since signing, Campus Sustainability has worked to initiate SDG focused initiatives into all our work and is currently working to integrate SDGs throughout all areas of the College.

Campus Sustainability strives to incorporate and promote sustainability throughout all aspects of Confederation College including operations, facilities, education, and community partnerships. In addition to our commitment to SDGs, Confederation College incorporates the Campus Sustainability Guiding Principles (LACE) into sustainability initiatives:

  • Lead by Example: Embed sustainability principles into all College practices and operations.
  • Apply a Sustainability Lens: Review processes, developments, and new projects with a sustainability lens.
  • Communicate: Support individual and departmental actions that create a culture of sustainability.
  • Engage: Provide sustainability resources, speakers, and service learning to support integration.
