You've heard of the various cyber security attacks and incidents in the news over the past year. These have been increasing in higher education, and our College is by no means immune to these attacks.
Over the past year a number of our student/staff login accounts have been compromised by cyber criminals/hackers, and used as means to generate spam messages or other more serious cyber activities. To assist in combating these attacks against individual student/staff accounts, the College has implemented Microsoft's risky login algorithm to all logins. This software identifies and disallows login attempts that are out of the ordinary.
A side effect of the risky login prevention is occasional false positives, such as when you are accessing your account from a different town or region. If this happens the account is locked out, requiring a call to the Computer Services Helpdesk to resolve.
You can make your account more secure and avoid these calls to the Helpdesk by setting up the Microsoft Authenticator in advance. This app is a multi factor authentication tool that will enable you unlock your account when a risky login is identified. Take the opportunity to improve the security of your account by downloading and configuring the Authenticator app. Instructions are attached.
