Confederation College is proud to announce the official opening of Anwebiiwining, the Confederation College Indigenous Gathering Outdoor Space (CCIGO). This innovative outdoor space, designed to honour the land and water, marks a significant step in the College's commitment to Indigenous learning and reconciliation.

Anwebiiwining, “a place where you rest” in Anishinaabemowin, provides an accessible and versatile outdoor space for sharing and learning on the land. It will be a hub for cultural celebrations, outdoor study, lectures, and community gatherings.

“Anwebiiwining represents our ongoing dedication to creating inclusive spaces that celebrate Indigenous culture and knowledge,” said Michelle Salo, President of Confederation College. “This gathering space is not just a physical location; it is a symbol of our commitment to reconciliation and our respect for Indigenous traditions.”

The creation of Anwebiiwining aligns with the second pillar of Confederation College's current strategic plan, which focuses on Indigenous Learning. It directly supports Goal 3 of this pillar, which is to implement and support the knowledge and cultural traditions of Indigenous peoples as part of the College's commitment to reconciliation.

Vice President of Indigenous Leadership, Partnership and Strategy at Confederation College, Wendy Landry emphasized the significance. “Anwebiiwining provides a dedicated space for students, staff, and community members to connect with their culture and share their traditions with others. It's a place of learning, reflecting, healing, and coming together.”

Anwebiiwining features a circular gathering area symbolizing unity and equality, natural landscaping that respects and honours the land, and accessible pathways that ensure inclusivity for all community members, along with areas for traditional ceremonies and teachings. The space is fully lit, electrified, and has internet access, allowing students at the College’s seven regional campuses to participate remotely in events and classes.

Confederation College invites the community to visit Anwebiiwining and experience this unique space that bridges cultures and promotes understanding. The College views this as a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and culturally rich educational environment.
