SUCCI Spotlights are our chance to shine a light on a service, or support at SUCCI, the  College or in the community that will help students succeed. We want everyone to feel welcomed, and included at the College.  One of the ways we can do this is to create spaces where everyone feels safe. Confederation College Dean, of the School of Access and Success Anne Renaud and Pride Centre Coordinator Deanna Kerkvliet sat down with SUCCI President Ronne Kasana to chat about the Gender Inclusive Facilities Initiative.

Want some more information? Check out the video and the information below. Watch for more information as these spaces open officially in the coming weeks.

Gender Inclusive Facilities at Confederation College

  • Safe spaces where anyone, regardless of gender identity or presentation, can use the toilet, wash their hands, change, and check the mirror
  • Washrooms and change rooms on each campus include signage, indicating the space is inclusive and that Confederation College respects everyone’s right to choose the washroom that is appropriate for them
  • Available on each College campus
  • Inclusive signage will also be posted outside binary facilities to decrease fear and anxiety for trans and non-binary people, and allow them to feel comfortable in the facility of their choice

Why Gender-Inclusive Facilities?

  • Safe spaces for trans and non-binary people, and those whose gender expression may not appear to match their gender identity
  • They decrease anxiety and fear for trans and gender diverse people while using the facilities as there is less chance of confrontation or assault
  • Can also be helpful to a variety of other people, such as parents/caregivers with small children of a different gender identity; people who have a caregiver or person attendant with a different gender identity than them; and people who need privacy for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to, those who experience anxiety, are breast-feeding, and people who need a place to administer medication.
