This posting is to provide an update on a summer construction project that involves the replacement of a 32 year old section of roof over the C Wing of the Shuniah Building.
Work on this section of the roof will be done by local roofing contractor Rugged Air Industries and will start this week. The work area of the contractor will be restricted to the roof area and construction area identified below:
The scope of work for this project includes the removal of the existing ballasted roof membrane, insulation, and metal flashings as well as the installation of new roof insulation and a fully adhered EPDM roof assembly complete with new metal flashings. The roofing work will involve the use of adhesive to adhere the rubber membrane to the insulation. Last year there were concerns around the roofing adhesives used. This year the work area is not as extensive and won’t be in the vicinity of the main air intakes, however we will take measures to minimize the potential for odors to be carried into the buildings. One-two hours ahead of and during the application of the adhesive we will adjust the intakes on the HVAC systems on the West side of the Shuniah building to limit air coming from this direction.
As was the practice last year, if you are experiencing any concerns due to adhesive odor, you can discuss temporary alternative work locations for the period of work with your supervisor.
Noise from construction tools and equipment is anticipated throughout the duration of the project which is scheduled to be completed by the end of June. Questions regarding this project can be sent to [email protected]
Thank you for your patience and understanding throughout this project.
