Confederation College introduced a Whistle Blower Protection Policy and accompanying Practice in 2012 (4-2-07 and 4-2-07B at www.confederationcollege.ca/policies-and-procedures) to provide members of the College community with the ability to report any evidence of improper activity related to the following areas:

  • a criminal offence;
  • substantial neglect of duties;
  • substantial mismanagement of any College or public funds;
  • a material breach of federal, provincial, or municipal statute or College policy, procedure or regulation; and/or
  • a substantial and specific danger to the environment or public health and safety.

Recently, an anonymous complaint was made to our Board Chair, which did not follow the process outlined in the Policy or Practice. As a result, we are reminding our College community of the Policy and Practice in place to make a complaint. Process is important in order to protect all parties, respect confidentiality and ensure adequate information is received to appropriately follow up, address any misinformation, and where necessary, conduct an investigation.

To ensure the Whistle Blower Protection Policy and accompanying Practice remain relevant and appropriate, we are undertaking a review of both documents and welcome your feedback. Members of the Policy Committee will be seeking input from their respective constituencies in the coming weeks. You may also contact any member of the Policy Committee directly with your feedback. The Committee initiated discussions earlier this week and will be meeting to complete the comprehensive review of this Policy and Practice on February 16, 2021.
