Confederation College, in collaboration with the Student Union of Confederation College Inc. (SUCCI), unveiled a new 9-hole disc golf course on campus. The course, themed around the 7 Grandfather Teachings, features artwork by local Indigenous artist Kayla Esquega.

Confederation College's commitment to mental health and well-being is further highlighted by the timing of the course's unveiling on World Suicide Prevention Day. This alignment underscores the College's dedication to raising awareness about mental health issues and providing supportive spaces that promote both physical and mental wellness. By offering a venue for recreation and reflection, the disc golf course serves as a reminder of the importance of community support in fostering resilience and well-being. The event included remarks from College and SUCCI Presidents, along with demonstrations on how to use the course.

"This course exemplifies our shared commitment with SUCCI to fostering wellness and community engagement," said Michelle Salo, President of Confederation College. "We are proud to integrate the Grandfather Teachings—respect, love, bravery, truth, honesty, humility, and wisdom—along with Kayla's beautiful artwork, enhancing the cultural significance of this space."

Robin Gathercole, SUCCI President, emphasized the transformative impact of the new disc golf course as a vibrant hub for physical activity and community interaction. "Spaces like this are vital for fostering both physical and mental well-being, providing our community with opportunities to connect, unwind, and thrive," Gathercole stated.

Kayla Esquega draws inspiration from the woodland style and renowned artists such as Daphne Odjig, Christi Belcourt, and Norval Morrisseau, bringing a unique blend of pastels and florals to the course's artwork.

The new disc golf course is an example of Confederation College's commitment to reconciliation. The 7 Grandfather Teachings are also prominently displayed in the College's REACH Atrium. Additionally, the College has been incorporating the Negahneewin Council's Indigenous Learning Outcomes (ILO) across all of its programs, which will help to foster a deeper understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures.

The course also reflects Confederation College's pioneering role as one of the first post-secondary institutions in Ontario to sign on to the United Nations SDG Accord. By integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into this project, the College promotes a healthy and equitable future, encouraging community engagement and environmental stewardship through recreational activities.

The grand opening included greetings from Elder Melissa Roberts, words from the artist, and a ceremonial first throw, officially marking the course's availability to college staff, students, and the wider community. Confederation College and SUCCI invite everyone to experience this unique space, fostering wellness and connection through the joy of disc golf.
