In Memoriam - Mike Cachagee and Jerry Perrault
Posted:
It is with sadness that we mourn the loss of two important former Confederation College colleagues, Mike Cachagee and Jerry Perrault.
Mike Cachagee was a remarkable individual who made invaluable contributions to our college and the Indigenous community. Mike's passing leaves a profound void in the realm of advocacy for residential school survivors and Indigenous rights.
As a survivor himself, Mike dedicated his life to seeking justice and healing for those affected by the residential school system. As the dean of Native Studies at Confederation College and a founding member of organizations like the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association and the Ontario Indian Residential School Survivors Society, his tireless efforts have made a lasting impact on our institution and communities in Ontario.
We remember Mike not only as an advocate and leader, but also as a captivating speaker who possessed a remarkable capacity to educate and inspire through his words. He was a true warrior for Indigenous rights, and his impact will resonate for generations to come.
We are forever grateful for his contributions, and his absence will be deeply felt within our institution and the wider community.
We also mourn the loss of Jerry Perrault, a long-time leader of the Negahneewin Council. Jerry, who was born in Fort Frances on December 2, 1946, dedicated his younger years to local guiding in the Rainy River District. His career included several years of service with Indigenous Services Canada and a role on the Rainy River Board of Education.
Jerry was a traditional hunter and fisher, providing for his community and known for his captivating fishing tales. As an educator of cultural matters, he inspired children to strive for their academic dreams. He was a genuine leader in his community and family.
The establishment of Indigenous educational and training programs at Confederation College can be credited to the leadership and visionary thinking of Indigenous community figures such as Jerry. His absence will be profoundly felt.
